Blackheads are also called open comedomes. Blackheads, are follicles that have a wider than normal opening. They are filled with plugs of sebum and sloughed off cells and have undergone a chemical reaction resulting in the oxidation of melanin. This gives the material in the follicle the typical black color. A blackhead is a type of acne vulgaris. It is caused by excess oils that have accumulated in the sebaceous gland 's duct. Blackheads are typically caused by excessive oil and makeup. Both blackheads and whiteheads are forms of acne. Blackheads, affects people of all skin colours. The processes that cause acne are exactly the same in people with black or brown skin but the impact is altered by the skin pigmentation. The sebaceous glands of people with acne are especially sensitive to normal blood levels of a hormone called testosterone, found naturally in both men and women. Blackheads are not caused by dirt on the surface of the skin, and oil on the surface of the skin usually does no harm. But it is important for a person to wash their face regularly with any basic soap. There is no need to buy special soaps, and harsh abrasives should be avoided.

Blackheads occur when dead skin cells block the pore through which a hair emerges from the skin, and the oil that would normally travel to the surface of the skin gets stuck and solidifies. Open comedones are blackheads and closed comedones are whiteheads. They tend to be most prevalent on the skin of the face, neck, and chest, though technically any place where one has hair follicles can yield blackheads or whiteheads. Blackheads are one of the ways in which acne presents itself, along with whiteheads, and larger, painful cysts. Blackheads and whiteheads are very similar, but the main difference lies in the fact that the follicles forming involved in blackheads are larger and remain open. Blackheads and whiteheads can also be treated using antibacterial products like benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin. Benzoyl peroxide is good for mild cases. It treats the hair follicle so as to reduce the clogging.
